The California Department of Water Resources, Fish Passage Improvement Program (http://www.water.ca.gov/fishpassage/), is researching fish passage at large dams (>20m).  This research includes technologies that were historically used, or are currently being used or planned for both upstream and downstream passage, as well as any assessments that have been completed to determine their effectiveness (professional judgment as to effectiveness is fine as well).  We are mainly interested in passage of salmonids, but technologies for other fish species are also of interest.  Any information on this topic will be greatly appreciated, and will be compiled in a white paper which will be available on our website.

Thank you,

Randy

You can get guidance on suitable roughened channel lengths in California from the relatively new Fish Passage Design and Implementation Manual published by California Dept. of Fish and Game.  Its available at:

I was wondering EXACTLY where the 1' or 0.3m adult jump criteria came from.  My little bit of sleuthing around has lead me to believe it is from fishway data.

Similarly, where did the juvenile jump criteria come from?

Thanks a bunch,

R

PS- can anyone send me a copy of Bell, 1986?

Thanks!

Hey All -

I picked up an unknown PIT tag at two stationary HDX antennas.  It is a Read-Only tag type, and the number is 0000_0000000066752884.

I am working on the Little River, North Carolina; a tributary to the Neuse River.  The fish was picked up heading downstream on May 26, 2009.  It had been upstream of our upstream most antenna, which is around 70 rkm from the Neuse.

I know there is not a database of PIT tags on the East Coast, but figured it would be worth a try to see if anyone could ID the mystery fish or give me a few leads.

Hi Abel,

I'm not aware of any specific criteria for lamprey passage other than the one you've mentioned.
But you might want to talk to Jacques Boubee (j.boubee@niwa.co.nz) who has lots of experience with eels here in NZ or to Michel Larinier (larinier@imft.fr) and Francois Travade (Francois.Travade@edf.fr) who work on fish passage issues in France (incl. lampreys).

If you find something, I'd be great if you could share it with us.

Good luck

  Hello,
Does anyone know if passage criteria have been developed for Pacific (or other) lampreys?

If so, are there existing inventories or spatial data on culverts that impede lamprey passage based on these criteria?

The only existing evaluation I am aware of was done by the Columbia River Lamprey Technical workgroup and essentially identifies data gaps on this subject.
http://www.fws.gov/columbiariver/lampreywg/docs/LampreyPassageTechnicalDoc090304.pdf

If you are interested in this subject, please post here or contact me at
abel@stillwatersci.com.

I am contemplating developing a proposal to address this apparent data gap and would be interested in teaming with passage experts.

Thanks,
Abel Brumo
